ENGAGEMENT

his year’s Standard Bank IRONMAN African Championship which took place in Nelson Mandela Bay in April once again showcased the spectacular support of the sport of triathlon. Standard Bank’s continued involvement in the sport further highlighted the growth of the three-disciplined event in South Africa. A world class event at a beautiful city of Port Elizabeth with an ultimate African experience attended by athletes from 62 countries around the world. Africa’s best spectators course, the best run course in the world, a scenic race course along the coast and voted the 2nd race venue in the world.

ACHIEVEMENT

With nearly 2000 entries for the event, the city of Port Elizabeth once again showed its unique hospitality by welcoming athletes and visitors. American Ben Hoffman took top honours in the PRO Mens race followed by Nils Frommhold and Micheal Weiss in third place. Lucy Charles-Barclay of Great Britain defended her Standard Bank African Championship with Spaniard Gurutze Frades coming in second and South African Annah Watikinson completing the podium. Standard Bank’s vibey Blue Zone for athletes and supporters kept the spirits high with great music, great refreshments and enthusiastic volunteers at the service of the athletes. Athletes used their trip past the Blue Zone as a dose of motivation as some used the time to even dance to the music and get hosed down from head to toe for a fresher road ahead.
